Discovering Relief Printmaking

The aim of this course is to introduce you to the rich world of relief printing, exploring the potential of this process in expressing your own creative ideas. We will approach this fascinating tradition from a contemporary perspective, looking at many artists working in this medium today. Learn how to use different materials to make your own plates, working with lino and different types of wood, as well as unorthodox materials such as card, plastic or metal. You will also be introduced to carving techniques and other plate-making methods.
Expressive Printmaking
Tutor: Altea Grau Vidal
4 days - June 19th to 22nd
£250 Class size: 6
An enjoyable course encouraging a playful and experimental approach to printmaking while introducing print techniques to absolute beginners and encouraging personal development for the more advanced. Experiment with basic processes such as etching and aquatint on different materials such as zinc and steel. We will also introduce colour and texture using techniques such as open bite, spit bite, soft ground and woodcut. All these techniques are easy to combine, creating expressive and vibrant prints.
Papermaking and Bookbinding
Tutor: Altea Grau Vidal
4 days - June 29th to July 2nd 11am to 5pm
£250 Class size: 6
This workshop will teach you how to make paper, fold it and manipulate it using specialist tools. You will learn four different book structures: the traditional codex, the concertina, the Coptic and the Japanese stab binding, to produce beautiful handmade books that can be used for presenting your own artistic work, for personalising to make unusual gifts, or as the basis for creating unique artists books. Tips will be given that will show you how to continue to make your own books from home using minimal equipment.
Combination Printing
Tutor: Paul Wye
3 weekends: 6-7, 13-14, 20-21 July 9 (10am - 4pm)
£375 Class size: 6
You will be introduced to a range of expressive techniques including monoprint, collograph, chine colle and drypoint, using them in combination; layering them together to create lively, original and personal prints. The techniques will be taught separately and as you learn to handle them you will be taught how to construct and layer them together using your own designs to produce prints that are truly unique and individual.
Starting with Screen Print
Tutor: Paul Wye
6 days - July 26, 27, 28, and August 2, 3, 4
£380 Class size: 6
This course will introduce you to the process of screen-printing - from transferring your image onto your screens to finally pulling your prints. Screen-printing is an exciting and versatile medium that will allow you to print using stencil or drawn desgn onto either paper or fabric. Over the course you will develop you skills and experiment with multi-coloured and layered prints using your own designs.
