Most of the courses on offer are suitable for all abilities unless stated otherwise. Beginners are very welcome. It is also possible to join some courses after the start date as tuition is largely individual and groups are small. We also offer Open Access (supervised but untutored time) for those with sufficient experience to work on their own. Pre-book by contacting us.

Initial supervised session - £9 per hour (This is an induction to the studio)

Open Access - £7 per hour, or £20 per 3 hour session

Open Access Concession -  £3.50 for those booked on a printmaking course, for the duration of the course only

GUM ARABIC TRANSFER PRINTING - ADVANCED 

Tutor:   Nikki Rose

This is an advanced course developing the medium of 

gum arabic transfer printing using photocopies of 

drawings and photographs. The process is a more 

accessible form of lithography which uses the same 

principal of a water resist to create a printed image in oil 

based ink. During these 4 workshops, students will build 

on skills already practiced with  a single “plate” printing. 

They will be learning how to create colour or tonal 

separations using basic photo-shop techniques. The aim 

of this course is to produce a range of individual prints in 

colour using multiple “plates”.

 

ETCHED LINO

The Etched Linoleum process is an exciting and 

unpredictable combination of  intaglio mark making and 

lino relief printing techniques. Instead of the traditional 

cutting of the surface, astrong alkali solution is used to 

‘etch’ away the surface so producing images that can 

contain expressive brush strokes, fine lines and areas of 

granular texture that range from soft to very granular. The 

blocks can also be printed intaglio and relief at the same 

time with different colours giving a rich satisfying result. 

The course will be structured to enable different levels of 

experience. Some previous experience of drawing, 

painting or sculpture would be desirable. Experience of 

printmaking would be ideal. 

 

COLLAGRAPH

  Autumn Term - Oct 28 to Dec 2 

Times:   10am – 4pm

This course will encourage a flexible, creative approach 

to collagraph printmaking using a large range of materials 

to produce plates which contain contrasting textures from 

the softest tones to deeply embossed and shaped 

images. Intaglio and relief methods of printing in colour 

will be explained as well as the use of chine colle.


MIXED MEDIA, COMBINATION PRINTMAKING 

Tutor:  Clive Vosper 

Cost:   £490 (includes most materials) 

Dates:   12 Thursdays 

  Spring Term - Jan 13 to April 7 (excluding Feb 24) 

Times:   10am – 4pm 

Class Size:  7 

This course explores an innovative and experimental 

combination of new and traditional Printmaking media. 

These will include Monotype, Collagraph with Chine 

Colle, Gum Arabic prints and Drypoint. The course will 

begin with a series of 1 to 2 day workshops on each 

process, building a knowledge base, that will be the 

springboard for each students work which will develop 

using all or some of the techniques learned. The course is 

structured so that, with guidance, students are able to 

develop their own ideas by using the combination of 

processes appropriate for their work. For those who wish 

to be given a starting point, an explanatory brief with the 

suggested theme of “Time and Memory” will be provided. 

Beginners welcome, but some experience in art 

desirable.

 

ETCHING INTAGLIO PRINTMAKING

Summer Term – May 5 to Jun 9 

Times:  10am – 4pm 

Class Size:  7 

A contemporary approach to traditional etching(intaglio) 

using steel plates etched in Ferric Chloride and Nitric 

Acid, in a safe and well controlled way. Modern acrylic 

resists will be used, adding a collagraphic element to the 

image possibilities. The course will also cover printing in 

colour, using more than one plate, and introduce the use 

of monoprint techniques with the etched plates. The 

course is structured so that with guidance, each student, 

is helped to develop their own ideas through process.

 

PHOTOPOLYMER INTAGLIO 

Tutor:  Clive Vosper 

Cost:   £220 

Dates:   5 Thursdays

  Summer Term - Jun 23 to Jul 21 

Times:   10am – 4pm 

Class Size:  7 

The possibilities of Photo Etching, Solar plate and Photo 

Collagraphs will be explored during this course. Students 

will provide their own source material based on their 

personal work and this can be in the form of digital 

images, drawings or photographs. A detailed explanation 

of what to bring will be provided. The course will cover the 

laminating, exposure and development of plates and 

etching where appropriate. Also the layering of images 

and printing of plates using oil based inks. Some 

experience of printmaking is desirable.
